Anatomy of a CC license

CC licence building blocks

All CC licences contain a combination of these four elements. The first one (Attribution or BY) is mandatory. Together with the other three, in different combinations, the six available CC licences are formed.

BY Icon

Attribution or BY

The element included in all licences that requires the creator to always be credited.

NonCommercial or NC

This element prevents use for commercial purposes. The user may be a commercial entity, but the use must be non-commercial.

ShareAlike or SA

This element requires all adaptations to also be licensed with the same, or equivalent licence as the original work.

NoDerivatives or ND

This element prohibits adaptations of the licensed work, and the licensed work may only be used in its original form.

CC licences and copyright

CC licences work together with, and not against national copyright legislation. All types of use that are allowed under regular copyright rules, such as quoting, paraphrasing and satire, do not activate the CC licence and are unaffected by it. A CC licence can only be used to grant rights beyond regular copyright, never to take them away.
